Onboard, three dual-balance sets of MT XS204 balances are installed, one each in the Core, Chemistry, and X-ray Laboratories. Software developed by IODP uses the two side-by-side balances (one for the unknown and one for a reference mass; Figure 1) to determine mass on the moving vessel. These balances can be used for masses ranging from ~1 g (possibly as low as 100 mg) to ~150 g. Although the XS-204 balances have a capacity of 200 g, ship heave will cause any sample or container weight to vary by a significant degree, so the user should keep samples well below that limit to avoid overloading the balances.
