Safety Instructions
Intent
The purpose of this document is to inform the user of the specific hazards associated with operating the IODP Laser Core Liner engraver. This is not a user manual.
Classifications and Hazards
The system as designed and operated with the safety interlocks, is a Class I system and requires no PPE to use.
However...
Operation of the Keyence ML-Z9500 CO2 Laser dismounted from the cabinet or with the safety interlocks defeated, poses a serious threat to the user. In this configuration the system becomes a Class IV system and requires special PPE and protocols to be in place per TAMU EHSD policy. Unless specific permission from the Lab Officer (Laser Safety Officer) is given, all IODP personnel areĀ prohibited from using this system in this configuration!
In addition to the laser hazard, the engraving process creates both fumes and particulates that are potentially hazardous. To prevent exposure, make sure that the exhaust system is on and drawing with sufficient volume to clear any hazardous material from the cabinet. Also, do not open the cabinet until you have visually confirmed that all hazardous fumes have been removed. Should the exhaust system fail, do the following:
- Keep the cabinet door closed.
- Post a notice on the door that the system is offline until further notice.
- Turn off power to the laser.
- Notify the Lab Office or Assistant Lab officer on duty.
- Call 209 and report the exhaust system failure to the ECR.
