Technicians: Alejandro Avila

Scientist: Justin D. Estep, Lewis Grant, Andrew McIntyre, Angela L. Slagle,

Summary

124 cores were acquired from the bottom of the ocean, 34 APC, 19 XCB and 71 RCB, sediment cores were measured in fast track with 10 cm of resolution and NGR in two position. After at lease 4 hours in the rack they were measured in WRMSL, oxygen then ThermCon and finally take the Rhizo samples.

For hard rock core the P-Wave was turned off

Individual Measurements Systems

Natural Gamma Radiation (NGR)

  • Background has measured at the beginning of the drilling, same with the energy calibration (no modification were needed), at beginning of the site U1559 a new background has performed and energy calibration to, the threshold calib verfication has stored in .exe file on "test" folder (in desktop)
  • No issues has reported in this expedition

Section Half Image Logger (SHIL)

  • Temperature controller on light system fail at the beginning of the expedition, ET specialist Garrik changed the temperature control and add two releases to both heating system and an external release is connected to buzz alarm to cut the general power to the heating system, wiring is explained in ET report

Section Half Multi-Sensor Logger (SHMSL)

  • No issues has reported in this expedition

Thermal Conductivity (TCon)

  • Arrived new mini puck H51033, probe archive has installed on puck database. Pen drive with info has stored on ThermCon PPTRKF3 drawer

  • Some test are made at the beginning of the expedition and using 20 like DCL the first data are not higher than the other values.

  • Puck H11028 loose connection

  • Puck H11038 loose connection

    • Both pucks are given to ET to review connections:

    • Both pucks responded to the resistance measurement differently than expected compared to the properly functioning puck, on visual inspection under magnification, corrosion wear is evident on both pucks H11028 and H11038 (attached images)

Whole Round Loggers

Forward whole round track

  • Fast track measurements was made in the STMSL for the sediment cores, the resolution was fixed in 10cm
  • New support for vinyl shield on the GRA side

  • No Issues reported for this expedition

Aft Whole round track

  • A new water pusher were made, including the acrylic disc that had been installed in the previous expedition, the excessive press in the liner of the transducers broke it. The length of the water pusher now is the 122 cm same like the beginning and like is indicated in the label.

  • For hard rock samples the P-Wave was turned off
  • The service to the water pump was carried out at the end of the expedition

X-Ray Imager

  • X-Ray source was changed because present a low energy level indicated by pop up window warning wen the source ramp start to go up. That issue was detected in previous expedition when the recommended solution was change the source. calibration were made and actualized the image parameters because with the new source the energy is higher (note: do not use more than 100 kV or the high alarm could be triggered)
  • 0.5cm offset is present in the ruler at side of processed images

P-Wave Velocity Bayonet/Caliper Gantry

  • Red line in "Abs Zoom" show picking at 16.2us but the real picking is at 14.7us, you can see the real place in manual picking

MAD

  • Some modifications requested by the scientists were made in the MAD spreadsheet to carry out repetitions of the measurements of the samples, these changes were reverted before the end of the expedition.

  • It is requested that a signal be added to the tare button to remind scientists to do this operation when weighing samples. if that operation is not carried out in 6 hours (configurable), the timer will require the tare before continuing.

  • Cleaning service to the air pump was carried out at the end of expedition as is explained in the air pump maintenance manual.

Automated Vane Share (AVS)

  • Some AVS measurements has made in soft sediment corers
  • No issues has reported in this expedition
