Chemical Spill Prevention Guidelines
Laboratory spills can occur during a chemical's storage, transportation, or transfer, as well as in the actual experiment. To minimize the occurrence of a spill, do the following.
Transport
Â
Wear appropriate PPE.
Inspect shipping boxes prior to unpacking and know what is inside.
Unpack chemicals carefully and inspect contents before removing from box.
Use carts, where appropriate.
Use safety containers or rubberized buckets.
Use buddy system for obtaining dangerous liquid chemicals from BHAZ.
Use the elevator, do not transport chemicals through the stairwell.
Do not transport more than you can handle, take multiple trips or get help.
Have properly trained and thoughtful workers.
Â
Storage
Sturdy shelves and properly designed storage areas to minimize breakage and tipping.
Store containers by hazard class.
Label each container with expedition number and cycle stock.
Store larger containers closer to the floor.
Keep containers stored on shelves contained so they cannot fall off.
Use storage shelves with lips to reduce the danger of falling.
Regularly inspect the integrity of containers.
Â
Use
Wear appropriate PPE.
Make solutions and mixtures within a fume hood.
Provide spill containment to capture any leaks such as absorbent pads or container.
Pay careful attention to the size of containers to avoid overfilling.
Secure all containers to prevent tipping, especially with ship motion.
Bond and ground containers when flammable liquids are involved.
Reduce clutter and unnecessary materials.
Eliminate tripping hazards and other obstructions.
Have all needed equipment readily available before starting work.
