As time permits in the office, a few tasks can be done ahead of time to save time on the ship.

II. PORT CALL - Start of an Expedition

  • Shoot Headshots of scientists and marine specialists, usually after one of the first meetings. Post and distribute mug shot contact sheets as soon as possible but before the end of port call. The headshots are critical to help the scientists, techs, and crew get to know each other.
  • Assist in making /wiki/spaces/LN/pages/7338166156 for scientists and IODP staff (if needed)
  • Take mug shots of new SIEM/Entier personnel – produce poster before port call ends
  • PR Images as required, assist with PR tours as required

III. SITE PREPARATION - Prior to arrival on site and core on deck

  • Give the photo policy talk to scientists, this covers current core and close up photography policy
  • Meet with microscope users and find out how they would like the microscopes configured and configure them appropriately
  • Check /wiki/spaces/LN/pages/7338176602
  • Provide training to scientists on microscope usage (including microscope camera) and data upload/download procedures
  • Provide safety tour to all scientists working in the microscope area. Ensure scientists understand all safety concern.
  • Assist in core lab preparation according to the Core Lab SOP

IV. DURING CORING OPERATIONS

  • Download all SHIL from ImageGrabber and check for accuracy of information. AKA missing images, image quality, correct spacers, etc. Perform this duty 2-3 times a shift depending on core flow and bring any issues to the attention of the core lab staff routinely
  • Shoot requested close-ups daily and upload to the server
  • Shoot or assist taking PICAT images of Thin Section slides, daily if applicable
  • Check in with paleo scientist occasionally to make sure all microscopes are functioning correctly
  • Monitor the microscope users for issues and procedure in acquiring and uploading images
  • If available, assist in core processing according to Core Lab SOP

V. DURING TRANSITS

  • Continue processing cores through the lab as described above

VI. DURING EXPEDITION

  • Receive core and assist as needed in the core lab (i.e. splitting, restocking, boxing core, disposing of trash, and general cleaning and maintenance of core lab). Remember, the core lab is your primary duty and imaging duties must come secondary to that unless arrangements are made with the Lab Officer to meet special objectives.
  • Calibrate monitors and printer in the imaging office
  • Shoot video as required
  • Photograph any needed PR or engineering photographs as requested. Maintain Metadata for the still images, which were density-color corrected and transmitted to shore. Blanket append all meta data for all the raw images using Bridge Templates or other suitable means to identify every image with at least the expedition number, organization, place, and creator of the images with copy right and contact information (agreed terminology is photographer's name, IODP JRSO or the organization that applies).
  • Interface with the sailing Publications Specialist and the Staff Scientist and create weekly images to be transmitted to shore to the IODP Webmaster. This task should be limited to approximately 8 hours a week.
  • Perform all necessary cleaning and maintenance on machinery and equipment
  • Maintain inventory by monitoring quantities and performing physical counts. Notify the ALOs if any quantity discrepancy or unusual high usage occurred.

    VII. END OF EXPEDITION ACTIVITIES

  • Shoot Group, Tech and Science group photographs at appropriate time (usually shot after abandon ship drill - work with Captain on timing). Print and distribute to all shipboard members. The number is normally limited to those who participated in the big group photo or photographer's discretion. This can be done mid-leg.

  • Upload a digital copy of your lab report to the LO.
  • Copy the lab report and all /wiki/spaces/LN/pages/7338166069 collected (close-up spreadsheet, SHIL calibration, RAW and edited images, etc. on two external hard drives to be taken to IODP for photography archive on shore. This data is then moved to local archive on the Desktop or /wiki/spaces/LN/pages/7338176577 in the imaging lab for temporary storage (~4 months)).
  • Upload only the edited weekly photos to the 'Public' folder in the NAS and a copy of the Logo to the 'Expedition logo' folder. Add any new headshots and the headshot posters to the 'Imaging' folder on the NAS.
