Operating
WARNING: CARE MUST BE TAKEN WHEN SEALING AMPOULES BECAUSE GLASS REMAINS HOT AFTER SEALING
- Ensure valves are shut
- Connect the gas and compressed air and set pressures
- Open the gas and air valve and light flame
- Adjust gas and air to obtain a flame with inner cones of approximately 5 mm and the ends of the flame just overlapping
- Note: If the flames curl up there is too much gas
- Adjust the height of the ampoule rest so the flames play onto the narrow part of the neck of the ampoule where the seal is to be formed
- Place the ampoule in the flames and rotate the base of the ampoule slowly
- When the glass stem starts to glow red, use tweezers to hold the top of the ampoule whilst still rotating the base. Draw off the top as the glass softens. Practice will be needed to form a good seal.
