SHORE work for Imaging Specialist

Image corrections for JANUS core photos:

NEED to be PDF format and below 600 kilobytes

Rough procedure (probably needs refining):

  • Open the 1200 dpi photo in photoshop.

  •

    1. Click File >> Save a Copy

    2. Change the filetype to JPEG. Specify a filename. Click Ok

    3. Next menu for is for JPEG Options. You want to get the photo below 600 kilobytes, which is the size of other DSDP/ODP core photos.

                  i.      Image Quality 2 (“Low”)

                 ii.      Format Options: Baseline (“Standard”)

               iii.      Click Ok

  •

    1. Open the JPEG in Adobe

                  i.      Save as a PDF

Here are other things tried and the problems encountered:

  • The 1200 dpi photo cannot be saved directly as a pdf because the image sizes are >20 MB and ones online are around 500 KB

  • I opened the 1200 dpi photo in photoshop and tried changing the image resolution (Image Menu >> Image Resolution), then saving as a pdf. It does decrease the filesize, but I could not get the resolution to look as good as the ones online.

  •

    • Also, in Photoshop when you save an image as a pdf (File>>Save a Copy>> select filetype PDF) a new menu pops up asking about downsampling and changing resolution/pixel dimensions. It seems like PS is downsampling again when you save as a PDF. I eventually gave up this route because the final pdfs looked bad and they were still ~6-7 MB in size.

  • I compared the pdfs resolution of other DSDP core table photos in Adobe. Technically a pdf doesn’t have a true dpi, but certain objects within the pdf can (like if it is a raster versus a vector object)

  •

    • Open a pdf in Adobe

    • Go to Tools>>Print Production>>Output Preview

    • In the menu that pops up there is a dropdown box called “Preview”. Click on it and then select “Object Inspector”

    • Click anywhere on the photo and information about the photo object should appear

    •

      • The DSDP pdfs are all indicating to me that they are a combination of 300 pixels/in by 300 pixels/in, and 150 pixels/in by 150 pixels/in. I’m not sure why it registers the pdf at two different resolutions

      • When I look at the JPEG to PDF file I did today, I get 1200 pixels/in by 1200 pixels/in.
