Paleomagnetism

Technician: Daniel Rudbäck

Scientists: Brendan Reilly and Yi Zhong

Portcall: Amsterdam to Amsterdam (June 4  - August 2, 2024)

Summary

Expedition 403 has been a successful expedition for the pmag lab. No major issues have been encountered, the expected results have been achivied by the scientists, and some extra experiments were carried out successfully. Apart from the occational UTURN, cancelling tests or samples, and discrete data-file handling, I have been very hands off as a technician. Nothing major to note in the report, apart from the crowdstrike issue which left the SRM with 2 screens instead of 3.

Beth did work on describing the process of dismantling the SRM, and care was taken to not move too much stuff around, after stuff had been organized for demob prior to this expedition.

Instruments

Superconducting Rock Magnetometer (SRM)

No major issues encountered on the SRM this expedition. The software behaved nicely through sections, discretes, offline treatments etc. A field was trapped in harbor at beginning of expedition, which was quite poor. This was corrected together with the scientists after arriving at the first site, resulting in a decent field that they were happy with.

The major hurdle of the expedition came with the crowdstrike outage, causing the SRM computer to be out of action for half a shift. The computer was unable to reboot properly until Crowdstrike was disabled.  NI Max was corrupted and required a reset to default.  The COM-port configurations were reset during this and the alias names reassigned.  The computer will not display to the third screen after the crowdstrike outage.   The only lingering issues are the buzzbox com being named "COM3" rather than "BUZZBOX"

The string for the tray has slipped out of the two metal pins on two occasions. Tension was adjusted to mitigate this.

Haskris Water Chiller

No problems at all this time, emptied the settling-filter every week in the beginning, decreasing to every other week towards the end.

JR6 Spinner Magnetometer

Rarely used during expedition as the SRM was primarily used to measure cubes. No issues reported when used.

Magnetic Orientation Tools (MOTs)

Not used at all during expedition.

D-2000 AF demagnetizer

Used to run ARM on cubes. No issues reported.

MFK2 Kappabridge

No issues reported with the unit, it was used for all cubes sampled during the expedition.

Thermal demagnetizer TD-48SC

Used briefly and successfully to try and destroy suspected greigite in cubes.

IM10-30 and IM-10 Impulse magnetizers

No issues reported, used on many of the cubes to run IRM measurements.

An additional 3 cube sample holder was 3d-printed after scientist request for a more accurate placement inside of the instrument.
